My 10 Favourite Contemporary Pattern Designs by Ana Montiel

Summary / introduction

I’ve always been a pattern lover. I see no limits on pattern applications, imagine planes, plates, bikes and even tattoos! In this article I tried to select the most eclectic and inspiring pattern designs that talks and inspires me. I tried to avoid the “normal ornamental ones” to focus on more uncommon results.

Hope you like the selections.

Classic Tiles Revamped by Hanna Werning

Review: Inspired on classic tiles and revisited in a contemporary way the very talented Hanna Werning reaches a eclectic rich great result. I love tiles, I studied ceramics while on arts school and I must admit that a nicely esmalted tiled floor can make me sigh…

Handmade Patience for a Shu Uemura Shop by Tsang Kin-Wah

Review: Fantastic work by chinese artist TSANG Kin-Wah, an installation handpainted for a Shu Uemura shop in California. I love handmade things.

The Photographic One by Bygg Studio

Review: Loved this photographic pattern design created by Bygg Studio for/with Hjärta Smärta Design Studio. It feels 80’s, it feels girlie but it captivates your attention staring at all those little details…

Patchwork Geometric Type by Barry McGee

Review: I totally love Barry McGee’s art. His art installations are rich, luscious, bold and colorful. All this pattern patchwork feels very contemporary to me, like beauty among chaos.

Polytics by Astrid Krogh

Review: The ornamental neon work by Astrid Krogh amazes me. This piece was created for The Danish Parliament. Every 45 seconds the neon tubes change in different combinations of light and colours. There are more than 100,000 possible combinations.

Pattern for Smart Kids by Elisabeth Dunker

Review: A delicious figurative freestyle pattern for kids created by Elisabeth Dunker , a swedish artist. Love the colours, the volcano and the bear climbing the geometric structure.

The Typo-Graphic One by Johathan Calugi

Review: A brilliant typographic pattern (based on a great logo) by italian Johathan Calugi offers a contemporary clean result. A beautiful graphic work reigns in all his designs.

Art Déco Revisited by Mike Perry

Review: I totally love Mike Perry’s work, as graphic designer, as pattern creator, as illustrator… I choose this pattern as it makes me think of some kind of Art Déco designs revisited… A non-common colour palette, patterns inside patterns, geometric shapes, a piece with a special rhythm.

The Organic-Tech One by Shi Yuan

Review: A beautiful example by Shi Yuan on of how classic ornamental motifs can be reworked nowadays. A heat sensitive wallpaper that changes according the weather. A great idea to feel our home as a living creature.

Monochrome Timeless Minimal by Richard Rhys

Review: A minimal monochrome pattern that captivated my attention at the Pattern Foundry. Created by Richard Rhys this timeless linear motiv recreates some kind of op-art effect that makes my eyes stare at it for a looong time.

Netdiver asked all fab scouts to answer same 3 questions..

Biggest hurdle overcomed?

Ufff…So many I can’t even write down a list…these past years had been full of ups and downs, prefer to be on the optimistic side so I could only share some laughable stories with a glass of wine and some iberico (serrano ham) on the side ;)

Alex (my business partner) and I have learned a lot about life. To be perseverant, to keep the faith on what you are doing, to be focused like some kind of “zen warrior”, to be true to yourself…

Greatest moment?

Maybe one of the best moments so far, was a telephone call we received from The New York Times saying they want to feature one of our wallpapers… but I think/hope that the greatest moment is yet to come ;)

What next?

Soooo many things to do, my mind is bursting with ideas… am so naturally curious that I want to learn EVERYTHING, love to read, make different projects… Now Alan The Gallant (my studio) is creating a pattern design brand called Pattern Tales® and a beautiful e-shop with our designs called Gallant Tales, will be online soon.

On a personal level, working on an upcoming art exhibition for next Spring.

Biography

I am 27, live in Barcelona, studied Fine Arts and at the moment I am the co-founder and creative director at Alan The Gallant (formerly known as itte studio). Love learning different things, developing new skills, listening to music, drawing, cooking, watching the plants grow with my cat and enjoying the sunshine.

Before I was more into “art” and now into almost everything, trying to mix illustration with object design, re-thinking the concepts of ornamental wallpaper, trying to showcase my daily inspiration on my blog, …all paths can be “the next one”. :)
