Freedom + Partners
Freedom + Partners going flash 3D with their new website. Got mix feelings about this. From a usability point of view? A bit hard to navigate. As a little techno feat? No doubt.
Makes you wonder who does profit from developing such web experiments? Clients? Agency? Both?

Interesting new site, prefer to use it with 3d mode turned off.
Experimenting is always good, I was impressed by the navigation. Would have liked to see some images of the work, as opposed to always having to go to an external site to see it.
Its interesting that you bring up the comment of who profits… the point of this website was to be a clean cool 2d experience that is suddenly burst into 3D! It is more of a statement than anything else. It is a full sensory experience of our expression towards 3D and the space it provides us. The feel of it, the sound is in 3D too, the hidden content and the planes that 3D affords us to make information architecture even more robust is what we are stating here. It is an artistic expression of our company message.
This is great. I LUV the interface on this. Brilliant use of 3D. I don’t think they used 3D because they could. They clearly put quite a bit of thought into which bits of content display on which plane, and how the audio changes based on the XYZ coordinates. Awesome awesome awesome.
Also, I like that they added the 2D viewing for people that don’t want the 3D experience.
Well done.
Wooooooow, awsomeness. But, from the usability point is not rocking. You know, if I had to use this type of thing in anything, I’ll use it as an art exhibition, inside a gallery.
Not sure I’m in luv on everything with this one. Navigating is a little tiresome after the “whoa…awesome” reaction diminishes.
Do like the circle of logos. Nice touch to add depth to the 3D plane.
I wonder what the agency’s reasoning behind this approach. Also, whether potential clients who are not web-savvy get put off b/c they think it’s too hi-tech. Curious to know.
Our intention for this experimental design is to create a buzz around the SPACE we use to design for the web. Its not juts 3D for 3D sake but to show off a design philosophy that we have. 3D offers us more planes to hide and display information, it allows us to give users the ability to navigate freely around that space and to free us from the rigid grids the web is accustomed to.
The 2D design is simple and elegant but the 3D breaks loose and sets you free to explore. It is more of a statement than anything else and it is how we have chosen to express our abilities to think beyond and into the future of information architecture and interactive design.
If enough people are interested I can certainly set up a Q&A with our Creative Director Vas Sloutchevsky who is the genius behind some of the most talked about interactive work ever!
