Furnish edited by R. Klanten, S. Lovell, B. Meyer

Furniture and Interior Design for the 21st Century

To restore and renew my inspiration — books have always been the main source. Today, to be a well-rounded designer you need to be opened to multi-disciplines contributions to the current state of the industry. As the barrier between art and design narrows, guess we could say that we are indeed in an era where esthetics are an important aspect of modern life from the mundane to the most extravagant.

Furnish is an eloquent, polished and concise overview of the now scene in product and interior design. Each sections is documented with a well researched list of projects. The introductory text which sets the context methodically, is non-verbose, making it an easy and enlightening read. But the best part is the staggering quality of examples that spans the pages.

I was utterly surprised and tickled by the scope of what is going on out there — that I did not know of — and grateful to both fill the void and tap into what the object is or can become. Grateful too, that there is a sizable portion dedicated to experimental, rapid prototyping and questioning why do we need stuff anyway.

Presenting: Preparation, Process, and Pizzazz by Lea Alcantara

“There is a reason why public speaking is a common phobia; just because someone is knowledgeable about a subject does not mean they know how to communicate their ideas for others to absorb.

Never dive into creating your presentation without knowing the constraints within which you are working, as they can really alter how you present. When I started to prepare for my presentation, I had to ruthlessly narrow down what my goals for speaking were before I tackled the nitty gritty.”

Did you know that Safari 3.1 is available for Windows? We can't say same from M$ product fallouts for the Mac platform — like dumping IE5.2.. It claims to be the fastest browser on any platform — Safari is the first browser to pass the Acid2 benchmark from the Web Standards Project — and if you like the Mac chrome design — we window serfs can also own a little piece of it. And of course, available for the glamorous iPhone.

And that Apple claims their “engineers designed Safari to be secure from day one.” See the kewl interface and also own it as an extra browser to test your in-progress websites. Download the .pdf to see the complete functionalities.

Major drawbacks: the anti-aliasing of fonts, with no options to just say no thanks, the bookmarks open over the browser window instead as a drop down, and the fact that there is no lower chrome which I use all the time to check the URL address of a website before going there.

“The introduction of reformatting systems can lead to the disruption of mobile web sites for all of the users in their respective networks. This situation is a concern for mobile web neutrality and has the potential to jeopardize the mobile web as a platform in the years to come.”

A couple of years ago we encountered exactly the symptoms described of a proxy reformatting, whereas porn advertisement was inserted in the Netdiver content viewed by users of a mobile network in Japan.
