What an amazing illustrator Whooli Chen is. Hailing currently from Taiwan, she earned a MA degree at the University of the Arts London. Her delicately sketched elements are always coloured with a subdued and calming palette.

What about her masterful compositions? This is a skill that is essential for all illustrators: from editorial process to concept.

Building a (new) beginning

I am currently head over heels in preparing my very first art portfolio and because of iOS way of cataloguing the camera roll – (I work with 3 devices each with its own directory) – I collated new work in individual folders as back up..

Leaving me with a massive task to do: reconciling, sifting and deleting all duplicates.

From 55k down to 10k just for my iPad Pro. Still got 7k+ from iPhone + iPad mini to sort after the 10k are done. View my art feed.

So for now – I am minimizing my editorial activities to a strict minimum.

I am in the midst of revisiting links (years 04-08 to do) so – never mind broken links – the content is enough. Follow our web history from the very beginning..

Hello / Goodbye

Past January I had a life-saving surgery – I am now cancer free! Before the melanoma was discovered (on top of my right foot) – I was already suffering (for over 2 years) – from a severe sport (running) injury – which was misdiagnosed (and left untreated).

My condition has steadily detoriated since – and both feet are now sick (one from compensation). I am in waiting for two surgeries (one foot at a time).

My mobility is very restricted – spending 60% of my time on the couch. Standing and sitting is near impossible.

_______

Due to these circumstances – Netdiver Mag will be on hiatus until end of September. I will use this time to create digital art – from the comfort of my shiny new iPad pro tablet.

So you know – I am fighting to keep my mobility – my spirit is high and one day – I will be healed.

I’ve never seen something quite like this.

On hiatus

Hello everyone super announcement to make: starting now – Friday May 27 through Sunday June 5 – feed will be suspended as I will be in a music composing + recording session for our upcoming album Changing.

We are all beautiful minds – (waabm) on Soundcloud.

See y’all on the other side.

No hype – just beautiful

Introducing my new studio spaces. No hype – just beautiful shot + edited by Carole Guevin.

I have shot my reworked and rearranged design – photo – painting spaces on what can be best described as a spur of the moment decision + inspiration. As many designers – my eyes can intake a large lateral vision.. and since my painting spot was in the same room as the editorial design + curation workstation.. I was constantly nagged by the in progress canvas: "work on me – work on me!"

Also right across the design library (which double-duties as room divider) – is our music studio and well.. painting requires solitude.. and quiet lol – and no big splashes of colors – thank you. All walls are white except for one cherry wall in the painting studio.

So thereyago – here is my monochromatic slightly pinkly colorized graphically enhanced mini studio tour.

That decision proved the best I took to enhance my creative working flow.

Love my mid-Century Modern chair in yellow (original) cuirette.

A brightly naturally lit live / work environment.

_______

The design library shelves are all color coded by book spines – it is very very pretty.

Partial view of my shooting area + drawing table – Italian designed which I proudly own for over 30+ years. It’s where I spread printouts + mount miniature staging.

Love the Good Morning Sunshine poster.

Umbra paper bin by Joshua Davis.

_______

You can see down the corridor – stacks of canvases. Rearranging the studio cleared the space – making for a large empty studio entrance. In progress canvases relocated where they belong.

Still got to get rid aka give away the piled boxes of books under the console.

I did a mostly white + black with very little colours photo collages on the Metro work tables + console which were a bit damaged – hence got them at a real cheapo price.

Love the Laugh out Lout box. Inspiring quotes written all over.

Inside my X30 Fujifilm digital camera.

_______

Entering the painting space. Huge couch is a great reading spot and single guess bed – if needed.

All art in that room is mine – except for a small illustrated poster of Sydney harbour.

The coaster table is where all the Bubble Gum Dreamer props are stored.

The polka dots cushions were a rare find – and imitate the colored dots in the painting which represents how deep JF and I are attached while pursuing our life (ad)ventures. Cool huh?

The black cushions states New York – not New Work.

_______

The painting room has an unusual configuration – 5 walls. In fact the brownstone is located on an irregular lot which means rooms in the back are smaller and moving to the front – expand.

Crazy enough – there is not one single 90 degrees wall in the flat.

Sun orientation is S/E. Summer = 40+ degrees.

Yay for our portable A/C.

_______

Since I shot the series – a few more paintings made there way in – but not overwhelming the space. It’s rather pleasant and stimulating. Some of my paint tubes – I do acrylic strictly – are in that very useful desserte on coasters that I move around as needed.

I painted over a cheap artwork a gradient of red to deep orange diagonals.

I loved the narrow rectangular format.

It once was a bed head.

_______

All my drawing material + more paint tubes + masking papers etc are lodged in these Ikea shelves. We actually use these profusely and have put (6) chrome feet to elevate them – huh heighten them – design and purpose wise.

One day I will paint the pale one with some crazy artwork.. I am not a beigy girl.

The pièce de résistance is an in progress painting (yet still untitled) that has found a home and will be leaving the studio as soon as I finish it.

One day I asked Alaa (Dr Dekis) – what were her fav colors: blue + pink her answer.

In order to clarify what is blue to her – I showed her that painting..

And it was love at first sight!

She later wrote – (sent her the picture) that it gives her goosebumps.

Guess that’s the best compliment one can receive – no?

//\

I am immensely grateful for the space + gear we have.

I am anticipating many years of creation.

And discovery.

Oh MoMA Mia!

MoMA to close galleries dedicated to architecture and design.

THE MUSEUM OF Modern Art in New York City is closing its architecture and design galleries, along with the other “medium specific” galleries including photography and drawing.

Instead of living in a dedicated space, some of the works from all four mediums will be interspersed throughout the museum, as additions to preexisting (and future) installations.

_______

SVA Students Brand MoMA Design Store’s ‘Destination: NYC‘.

via: SVAClose UP

_______

What is sad is that – if design is everywhere as Paola Antonelli states – art is not everywhere.

The very reason there are Art Museums is because Art is not mainstream and same explicitly applies to Design. But it seems latter can be boot out.. huh merged.

If design was everywhere – ugly would have disapeared for good.. No?

MOMA had acquired a reputation for supporting design. It will now return to it’s touristy attraction level.

Emporium new imperium.

_______

The visual inspiration came from the rather ugly four-color ink-jet printing, flat photography and amateur typography found across small shops, street vendors and subway ads.

Zaha Hadid – RIP

ZAHA HADID 1950-2016. RIP

What a shocker – I have admired her work immensely – probably one of the most original + breaker of norms + status quo + glass ceiling.

portrait: Sebastian Böttcher

_______

Her architectural signature is recognizable the world around. Someone titled her The Queen of Curves! How apt indeed.

A work selection in black & white.

_______

Zaha Hadid’s early work played a huge role in my development as a designer. She was one of the best to ever do it. This is one of her paintings from 1982. What a gift.

_______

"Zaha’s drawings were never pure representation or simple formal research, but necessary tools for design production. Early drawings were a means of altering and modifying the plan, leading to the disappearance of difference between 2D and 3D.

In an interview, Hadid describes that she was attempting to appropriate the moving quality of elemental forms in Malevichs’ paintings in order to inject the idea of motion and energy in architecture, and thus free the plan from its static role."

_______

Hear, O Internet.

The Net is of us, by us, and for us.

Caring — mattering — is the motive force of the Internet.

Every link by a person with something to say is an act of generosity, an act of selflessness, bidding our readers leave our page to see how the world looks to someone else.

Personal is human. Personalized isn’t.

Every new page makes the Web bigger. Every new link makes the Web richer.

QOSh is a rather unusual side project by Jessica Walsh (partner of Sagmeister & Walsh) and Timothy Goodman.

Neuarmy Surplus

In early years of research on the www, I predicted that creatives would seize the day – and start selling not only their skills but ‘goods’ – without intermediaries.

Excerpt of a poster provocative enough!

_______

I have know Ryan Katrina aka Neuarmy for over a decade (at least).

What I admire most – is the fact that he has taken charge and sourced his graphic design – typographic skills to launch a brand named Neuarmy Surplus that produces wood signs – limited edition shirts – pouches and duffle bags.

Hand-drawn – hand-painted/printed !! And that branding suite!!

For Office Use Only

For Office Use Only is a graphic and interactive design studio hailing from NYC. First discovered their work back in 2004 – we are 10 years later – they are steady holding pace.

Vast difference? More experience and expertise warranted garnering high-end cultural mostly entities and projects.

They are good. Very very good.

I remember – when we ‘upgraded’ to Netscape (and proudly own a ‘hard’ copy).. don’t recall which browser we were using prior in ’95. I recall vividly Bill infamous: "I don’t believe in the Internet" and the big ensuing vicious attack by M$.

Epic and devastating.

Marc Andreessen may have known what he was getting into when he cowrote Mosaic at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications, but it wasn’t until he graduated from college and met with some Silicon Valley types that the Web revolution really began.

_______

In 1994 Andreessen launched Netscape Communications, offering his new Navigator Web browser (based on Mosaic) to the world. Finally, users outside of the academic world would get a taste of HTML, and nothing has been the same since.

Upon discovered attraction – started designing with these back in early 2000 – we even had a website with these. As you can see – the love lingers in my vintage pixel avatar.

Carole Guevin avatar

_______

He has an exceptional eye for composition – like none other. Geometric compositions. Can I say that? The collision of graphic grid meets architecture head-on is generating extraordinary. The results are splendid. Saturated colors.

Who wouldn’t want those ‘turquoise’ on a wall to look at in the dead of Winter as shown in the Spektrum Eins project?

Matthias Heiderich is a self taught photographer and an outstanding one as that – check his folio out. He lives in Hamburg, Germany.

_______

Creation and branding design for Beige, dedicated to personal hygiene nature-based products and aromas of plants, trees and other natural elements for body care.

Who would have thought of using a ‘front-slash’ as replacement for the ‘i’ letter. LOVE it! The line palette is unequivocally ‘beige’ – tone friendly for everyone – no matter their cultural roots. Smart!

_______

The Studio is a new TV channel that offers programs based on contempory art and all fields of design.

Love the use of whiter shades of pale – in this instance baby blue and powder pink. The logo deconstructed typography is gorgeous.

Graphic design sitting nicely at the shore of edgy yet not too so. And what about the beer wraps! Subtle.

Typeaholic??

Love Type? Oh yes. Yes. And yes. So he. Typeaholic?? Oh yes. Yes. And yes.

Sweet branding suite and print collaterals circa? Guessing these were part of either his ‘student years’ or ‘early career’ portfolio.

Angus MacPherson is now a resident creative at Human After All.

Nigel Buchanan *

Nigel Buchanan lives in Sydney and works in a big old warehouse with a bunch of other illustrators. He likes the company of others – that’s really nice to know.

He has won awards – that’s really nice. He has served these type of clients The Wall Street Journal, MTV,The New York Times, TIME magazine, Money Week Paris and The Radio Times in London – that’s really nice too.

_______

But what is even more nice – is the quality of his work. Such finesse. Such control. A cross between caricacturist and real-life portraitist – what is even more nicer – is the depth of his concepts.

Long live PRPL

PRPL short for Purple Rock Scissors (which imv is enigmatic enough) has such a great culture enunciation that it should become a universal manifesto of sort for all of us creatives.

We’re driven by the why.

_______

This isn’t window dressing, it’s our way of life. It’s not our work life, it’s our life’s work.

Heads up, they tend to be contagious (I agree):

Authenticity. To be genuine, be vulnerable.

Simplicity. Distill to the meaningful and balanced.

Drive. Do what you love.

Adventure. Take risks and embrace where they take you.

Mindfulness. Exercise a nuanced, articulate understanding.

Appreciation. Dwell on the good.

_______

No meager feat – they got a fantastic website too. Digging their looped live action zooming on studio interiors emblazoning their culture tidbits. Videos expanding on processes. Illustrations. Large type and pictures.

Really really good copywriting – choosy projects (including self-initiated) – blog posts – all this rolled into one uninterrupted digital wandering.

Long live!

Frame TV3

Frame’s take is a much slicker approach due context controlled environments and evolution of software.

_______

Reminds of the some of the very first Sony Bravia ad (circa 2005) of 250,000 balls released down a street in San Francisco. Nope no CGI. Real balls.

______

Frame was approached by ManvsMachine (behind the SyFy idents) – who were working on the rebrand for TV3 Denmark – to collaborate in the creation of six idents for the huge relaunch.

They wanted to have a magazine-like quality to the pictures of beautiful Danish homes getting flooded by TV3 logo balls.

_______

Served! TV3 Idents – Montage

CGI supremacy

Dvein is a collaborative collective from Barcelona – that pushes the limits of live action and CGI storytelling.

Obviously obsessed with morphing ‘gooey’ elements and some really hair-rising monsters – sometimes toying with textures and liquids – their skills are unmatched.
