Did you know?
I am a 3rd generation Miami native.
_______
I was born and grew up in Miami, FL and have been making art since I was about 4. My grandpa was a hobby artist and used to paint landscape and sailboat scenes. He would invite me over to paint watercolor scenes with him. I studied at Maryland Institute College of art (graduated in 2005) majoring in Fibers with a concentration in Animation.
The beginning of the paper sculptures happened in the south of France, Aix-en-Provence. I decided to study abroad there for a semester during college, so I brought 2 suitcases full of clothes and decided to purchase art supplies in France.
The Euro was very high so when I went into the art store I decided to buy one of the cheapest materials, but one that had potential. I purchased an assorted color stack of construction paper and began experimenting in my studio.
Eventually I began turning them into 3-dimensional sculptures.
I love how common and versatile paper is. It is in everyone's daily lives and people tend to overlook the amazing things it can do and be transformed into. I also love the idea of taking something that's 2-dimensional and flat and making it 3-dimensional and intricate.
I love geometric shapes and how they apply to lots of designs in nature. I love the mystery and amazing universal shapes in science and space. It is crazy to think that huge things out in the universe can have the same shapes as tiny microorganisms under a microscope. Also, it is interesting to me how much we still don't know about science and the way things work.
I hope to maybe reveal (on a visual level) some truth or insight about these ideas. I think geometry, nature, and mathematics have everything in common!

3 questions
Biggest hurdle overcomed?
My biggest hurdle has been trying to out-do myself with each piece of artwork I make. I want them to keep getting better and better, so it's a hurdle I'm jumping over each time I make a new piece!
_______
Greatest moment?
My greatest moment in life is probably jumping off a 50 ft cliff into the ocean in the Bahamas, then snorkeling a few miles along the shore with a remora (suckerfish) catching a ride on my belly.
_______
What next?
There is a show now open at Show & Tell Gallery in Toronto that I'm in. It is a 2-person show with myself and Maya Hayuk who is a great artist who I've admired for years. The show is open until June 12.
I'm looking forward to future exhibits which include art fairs, a large scale mural outside of the Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale, a group show at the Smithsonian and a solo show at Martha Otero Gallery in LA in 2012.
