Design news | Apr 02

Hivelogic devised a super script to encode email addresses and put a barrage to being spammed mercilessly by bots roaming the internet.

Looking for witty thoughts - read his articles! Way cool rotating b&w images. Thumbs up Dan!

I just did a test on yahoogroups - I cancelled my long standing account there (I was registered as far back as 1998 - with precedent owner). Since there are 2 lists using yahoo - I decided to open a new account... Guess what? Within 10 min of activating the new account - SPAM was in my mailbox with a @YAHOO.COM extension. I am absolutely furious!

I sent a complaint to yahoo and deleted the new account though I'm going to miss the lists - getting spammed is out of the question! Enough of that garbage!

Privacy security complaint - let them know!

An interesting new concept by Wired editor at large Kevin Kelly (who's been one of my fav futurist thinker and writer for a long time) and Well founder Stewart Brand: The Long Bets Foundation.

Read the article.

Inspired insights by Chris Esterline.

“I've been lobbying to hire programmers who'd rather code than suggest they have a notion of design. Let the designers design and let the coders build.

Steve Jobs had a vision -- it was through such vision that his engineers built what is now Apple. Where would personal computers be had Steve listened to the nay-saying engineers of the day?

Remove the art from the Louvre. What's left is a hauntingly large expanse, bare, lonely and without meaning. If I believe anything: it is the work of the artist that gives all of this (life, the web, etc) meaning.

What my mind sees is often different that what the tools allow me to build -- why not create and then ask the tools to evolve to meet my design.

What comprises the member group who dictates standards... Not who, but specifically what type of person develops standards. Why do those who organize logical structures end up dictating boundaries to those who generally have trouble with limits in the first place?”

IBM, Microsoft plot Net takeover by David Berlind

“IBM and Microsoft have been quietly busy behind the scenes for the last two years building a toll booth that could position the two companies to collect royalties on most if not all Internet traffic.

...According to documents on the W3C's Web site, IBM and Microsoft not only own intellectual property within specific Web services protocols, but also have no intentions of relinquishing their IP rights to those protocols should they become standards.

...The RAND framework is widely acknowledged as the one that keeps a vendor's options open in terms of being able to charge content developers and Internet users a royalty for usage of relevant intellectual property.”

In IE6 running on XP/Win2000 it seems there is a back button security loop!?!?!

Tx to everyone sending in their comments + suggestions on the Fee for content survey results. Keep them coming - these will be sorted and a *report* will be posted in about a month.

The compilation of the *Pay for content?* mini-survey is competed. Get the results + insights here.

There are a few open end questions at the bottom of that page. If you have constructive comments or suggestions - I am interested in reading them.

If you are a member of the Babble or WDF discussion lists - amongst others and are registered at Yahoo - pls verify your account info. THEY had the guts to default every account to *YES* for marketing info and even *email or telephone* contact in ref with this.

This is disgusting - appalling that Yahoo spams it's users after raking millions in their treasure chest. Users unite - voice this around you!
