Design news | Feb 05

What if doodle is your oodle... What if your living noodle... is to draw very-very naughty (and rhyming) doodles? Investigated and scrutinized at the brand new and just released ThunderChunky site, is such a specimen: The Boy Fitz Hammond.

On the topic of facelift, relaunches, redesigns, etc... Rasterized.org sports their 7.0 beta. Always an interesting topic, don't miss the article Dealing with clients by Scott Craig.

Now if you are in a serious blank, blocked, bored mode and got more than 2 secs on your hands - head to the AIGA Design Archives.

Did I say less is more! Well meet Ambidextre (inspiration comes with travel) home of motion art director Frederic Bourque - where the demo reel says it all. Now if that's not talent...

Emotional design à la Don Norman is to classify products along three dimensions of attractiveness (visceral), functional and usable (behavioral) and high in prestige (reflective), we can also classify people along these dimensions.

The Icograda Design Media Network is a guide to design publications and media worldwide. IDMN Participants form an online community dedicated to establishing and promoting standards and ethics in design journalism. They share ideas and information, foster discourse, and contribute to the furtherance of a meaningful body of knowledge regarding design and the role that it plays in modern society.

_______

ndlr: Netdiver was invited and became a member sometimes last Spring 2004.

Contained, spared, minimalist: Fluoro flash website. When less is best and efficient. That's good design!

Attention, Shoppers: You Can Now Speed Straight Through Checkout Lines! Radio-frequency chips are retail nirvana. They're the end of privacy. They're the mark of the beast. Inside the tag-and-track supermarket of the future... by Josh McHugh

More info on Spychips and Caspian (Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering).

Do it with style! Villa Roka lies in the outskirts of the beautiful Pirin mountain (Bulgaria). LUV it. The site is as spartan as this boutique hotel seems to be. Minimal yet refined.

Did you know that one of the best way to get some leads on new business is by joining a trade or professional association? Check the Collaborative page in the Toolbox to find a starting point. If you would like to suggest one to add to the list - don't hesitate and do so.

What if the Objects of Desire were fun and easy craft projects? Evolving and revolving familiar objects and as they say: Lifestyle momey can't buy! That's a great eco design idea and a Dan Pearlman project.

Although the illustrations are very sweet and almost child like, Adrian Johnson knows the real potency of communicating with images.

IdealWord is built with underlying boredom codes and whatever that means - it definitely generated out the box experiments with stunning visual results.

So what happens if you are three brothers (Don, Doug & Dennis) and the three of you chose to become illustrators and make a living out of it? Well you launch the Brother Jones Artworks. Of course each are unique and different although with the same initials and last name that can add up quickly to some vast and perhaps comical confusion but they DO have in common a dry sense of humor and sharp wits.

Read the FAQs to get an inkling of what I'm referring to. This is a world premiere for me.

Who said foundry sites would be boring? Cape-Arcona over the top eclectism with some funky fonts.

Talking about funk the 'Digest' is one of my fav font from Tricycle.

I know this spot is already running on TV but - it is a really greatly designed advertising (for a change huh?) by Target - Design for All. Tagline: Great design everyday for everyone.

I'll yay this. Imagine what could be done if designers were invited to 'redesign' the world. Must see!

I don't know about you - but 'shoes' are one of my fav clothing item. I had once a pair of sneakers that I just so LUV. Went on a trip and came back with only one shoe... that was a bummer... worst I never found another pair to replaced it in confort and look.

Well someone took this liking of shoes to the next level sorta speaking; presenting: the Sneaker Freak project.

Hixsept offers a mix of illustrations and a photographic montage that are somewhat grungy (trashy?) with a lot of attitude. Nice clothing from a collective of post-grafiti artists and more.

THE TAKE is a political thriller that turns the globalization debate on its head. Director Avi Lewis, one of Canada’s most outspoken journalists, and writer Naomi Klein, author of the international bestseller No Logo, champion a radical economic manifesto for the 21st century.

Must read article!!! The Credibility Gap - Part 2 by Peter Giffen.

“One of the biggest battles professional designers have is to establish themselves as strategic and conceptual thinkers who should be involved in a project from its earliest planning stages, and not beauticians who are brought in at the end.”

Wearables (how about a Bluetooth enabled snowboarding jacket?)!! Electronic widgets??? Read Core77 report on CES (Consumer Electronic Show). Check the Best of Innovations too.

Fresh! Shirts (model shown is no longer available) from Venour are simply delicious. From a young collective of promising designers of which, Steventic is one. New peep to watch for.

Uh-uh! Pay bloggers Program... whereas some (pre-picked) people are getting paid to 'write and talk about a company product... Although I agree word of mouth is the best asset ever... but what about 'paid' word of mouth? Same value? Have been following the unfolding of the Marquization thread with interest.

The product has room for itself to meet clients need for multi-level-instant-internally approved communication castings aka scalable content and take advantage of a networked frame of events - it leaves me wondering.

And you, what do you make of that?

_______

ndlr: Do you think what I just wrote - should be paid for?

When it rains it pours! One of the yummiest way to discover new talent is to indulge in the 'interview' section and Phirebrush is brimming over! Just heard they redesigned as well...

Isn't Spring early this year or what?

I'm nutz for fonts. Just luv designing and working with fonts. Now here is a little intriguing experiment - try it out: Typedrawing.

Oh nice! Creative Behavior new logo and new issue! Don't miss the Multidisciplinary design article by Sarah Lorenzen.

Designers' toys are in full bloom at Rotofugi. Amazing how this industry is just exploding!

Newpanic is (yet) another themed cardboard interface... what is interesting is how the hand (very realistic) pulls out and glues back a blank space when you select a new section.

Architects Hanson + Jung nice website. I really like the simple and convincing visuals and navigation.

It's kind of hard what to make of this site that covers a large spectrum of exhibits over an as well large spectrum of time. Have a look at Ladislav Sutnar website! Can you only imagine the time it took to collate the information... oi... lots of midnight oil involved I'm sure.

Interesting loading sequence, navigation and explorative interface for the unusual portfolio of Nicolas Baumgartner: IDSIGNER.

Awesome illustrator - dialéctica! Eclectism, urban and explosive imagination!

View and learn from HORT about everything design, especially around visual identity. New issue available: NR3. Highlighted: Visual identity/Design and Cd Artwork/Photography.

State goes to Prateville the (new) other side of Jemma (Gura) Hostetler who is an art director and designer who has been featured in numerous reviews and books, including one she co-authored, which challenges designers to push the boundaries of their creative tools!

Adjust your bookmarks!

If you haven't met him yet - do so: David Carson (Design). Sneak into the mind of a creative who seems to always be on hyperdrive.

Beinghunted has been around since October 01 and sports a for you to know more liner indicating their attempt to cover a large spectrum of designy stuff and topics.

Their 'Feature' section abounds with interviews.

Available Now! The January issue of Design In-Flight is here, with over 30 pages of tutorials, articles and commentary. A three page excerpt of the issue is available as a free download.

Breaking news! 2Advanced.net (contact Logan One) and NIS/Netkeepers.ca (contact Shaul Swartz) have teamed up to make a joint offer to rescue and help in transitioning all of Actadivina hosted sites. Sponsored sites (Second.Chapter) will receive sponsored packages and Clients hosted sites will receive a credit on the time left on their accounts by either companies.

_______

ndlr: This is a fantastic offer that shows the resilliency and capacity of our community to band together.

Nice interview with Marcel Wanders a product designer as well as Kitchen is the heart of the home competition results by designboom.

Jane Kurisu is a freelance illustrator and a new powagirrrl. Her style is very sweet and most appropriate for kids projets.

How about a 10% decrease of IE?!?!? Firefox is on the move! by Todd Dominey

ICGIST makes a formidable comeback. Their new site is even better than the one before. To those who thought you can't mix serious business with funky design and animations... be convinced otherwise. The quality - is speaking for it itself! LUV it!

What about your own perceptions? Would too much fame alienate you from interaction? Get a fresh take. The day Annie shot me. When a first-time author has his portrait taken by Annie Leibovitz, it changes his life -- at least while she's clicking the shutter by Brett Leveridge

Consequences-of-thought is “an exploration of visual thought created to explore the possibilities that could otherwise been forgotten.”
