A conversation with Jeffrey Zeldman / 2 by Brian Alvey

“Publishing a personal site is the best way to experiment with different kinds of design and content, to find out what interests a specific audience and what doesn’t, to discover what makes people burrow into a sub-section or ignore it, to learn how to manage and refresh large amounts of content, to develop an authorial voice and maybe also a signature visual style, to begin understanding the community aspects of Web publishing, and to learn what makes a site a living entity instead of a piece of work you finish and walk away from.

If you’re a commercial designer or developer and you don’t have a personal site, you’re missing an incredible opportunity to interact with real people, discover how they actually use the Web and bring these lessons to bear in your work.”

Architects' organization taking a cool approach: NSAA - Nova Scotia Association of Architects.

Another copycat! This time the site includes a script to prevent right-clicking context menu to avoid copy of the graphic (source code / second link)??? Go figure! Check: Cruck.webbyen.dk + Webbyen.dk

Translation: “Cruck! has now chosen to shut down the website for a period of time. Hopefully just for 1-4 days. I will then probably launch a new design. Questions or comments, click.”

Via Z -> Auto popups dead? For years, artsy designers have used self-launching popup windows to exert total control over every aspect of their site, including the size of the visitor’s browser window. It doesn’t work any more.

Since Mozilla 0.9, most modern browsers have given users the ability to turn off self-launching windows. And most of us do just that, thereby eliminating unwanted popup and popunder ads. This also means we can no longer see your self-launching porfolio site.

You have to see this flash site that has a cartoonish feel, the interface functiinalities are delicious: Cavach

Jeffrey Zeldman on web standards / 1 by Brian Alvey

“With a boss who doesn’t understand the benefits of making a change to the way things are done in-house, you again need to point out what it’s costing you to keep doing things the way you do and show the benefits of converting to lower-maintenance, more logical and more automated ways of working that tap into XML-based tools and services...

Just don’t feel you’re trapped because your boss doesn’t get it. If a handful of designers and developers could change the way all browsers are made and perceived — including those from Microsoft and Netscape — you and your colleagues can surely reason with a reluctant boss.”

There are times when one discovers a true treasure and what *interactivity* and *open-source*is all about. Indeed AMFA was a medecine for apathy! Just follow the guidelines in each of the issues. Some source files are available for download. Brillant!

Illuminating the Blind Spot: Leadership in the Context of Emerging Worlds. Read report.

“The waves of change sweeping the world–digitization, globalization, demographic shifts, migration, and individualization, as well as the rapid degradation of social and natural capital–are giving rise to arenas of clashing forces. These clashing forces play out as tensions between multiple polarities: speed and sustainability, exploration and exploitation, global and local ways of organizing, top-down and bottom-up approaches to leadership.

The following five practices appear paramount:

observing: seeing reality with fresh eyes

sensing: tuning in to emerging patterns that inform future possibilities

presencing: accessing one’s inner sources of creativity and will

envisioning: crystallizing vision and intent

executing: acting in an instant to capitalize on new opportunities.”
