Interface layouts
Harvested some interesting websites that each have a unique approach to their current contexts. The new trend, as you can see is all about ‘black/gray/white’ which are making a return as the favored color for contrast.
Do you think minimalist / empty is the new full?
Working on a new website? Don’t go dark – do something like Toko Design. Show your best work in a one-page with a proeminent contact link.

Large negative expanses (white space), simple top text navigation to projects and huge visuals to show off capabilities as This Studio did.

Got to make your visitors choose between two different sections? Make sure to use as Counter-Print did, explicit text with no ambiguities.

Super confident in your work? Then use merely a slideshow with easy next / previous links. Make sure clicking images takes to a more detailed section of the projects as Build did.

Use large black blocks for navigation and smaller lines to create an elegant minimalist effect to seperate sections as Subtraction did.

An excellent idea to put emphasis on the latest project delivered as Iain Claridge Studio did. Playing off grayscales affords a nice neutral interface.

Lastly, only dare using pop-ups windows if you have no other way to show a large portfolio as did Studio Newwork did.
Pictoplasma *up
The Pictoplasma Berlin Festival brings together an international scene of artists, directors, designers and agencies, offering a unique forum for all those working with – or simply loving – the visualisation and application of contemporary character design.
The lively exchange between the various disciplines highlights the importance of characters in contemporary visual culture.

This girl can draw! Pepa Prieto is very well known for her illustrated characters that are both endearing and odd at same time. Her work has been published and exhibited all over.
Thinking *up
Is it just me or there are a lot of newly relaunched websites going for huge visuals and lateral scrolling? MoCo Loco is one example that comes to mind. Well one of my fav bunch of people Duane King and company have redesigned Thinking for a Living that kept its signature soft pink background and nice typographic treatment for sections. Personally I really like it.

Obey Your Brain
It may hurt your eyes, because Obey Your Brain ain’t shy of using extreme visual bling, photographic artifacts and loads of.. animated .gif (!!!) to convey the creativity of the peeps hosting their music and art on the website.
Refreshing also, to see that such websites still exist. It means that the web 2.0 has not drain and silenced all possibilities.

‘Alien’ thumb
Heading out to elucidate what’s the latest concerning accident I had past September. There is still numbness, swelling, the scar of the open laceration still quite sensitive and gross nail growing after 2x surgery to derail infection.
X-Ray of my ‘alien’ right thumb. Was taken 3+ months after accident. Look at the tip you can still see the fracture. As Doc said: “It took a massive impact to smash the bone as that!”

The Goteborg Opera house new website is a nice tour de force from FB (Forsman & Bodenfors from Sweden). The interface is enticing, navigation simple and detailed enough. Pick one of the featured shows, choose listen, and see what happens. Nice touch!
While browsing, each sections is well written and presented with photography and even video clips. For visitors and fans, easy to get tickets and even book a table for dinner.

DIY Typo
Jessica Hische is a typographer (who prefers drawing a font from scratch is easier than scouring the Internet to find the right one) and illustrator working in Brooklyn, New York. She paid her dues working at a high profile shop (Louise Fili Ltd) and now is freelancing full-time with a scoreboard of impressive clients and recognitions as proof.

Hapchanced on the FLIGHT 001 (pronounced flight one) Manhattan store years ago! The brand was conceived in 1998 aboard Air France flight 023 somewhere between New York and Paris. John Sencion and Brad John were two business travelers who had spent far too much time preparing for their trip envisioned a travel store as streamlined as flight itself.
When not curating the best travel products in the world, they continue to develop travel products for the world.

Oh! Using quotes to create the letters ‘E’ and ‘B’ is a simple and brilliant identity solution that Mihail Mihaylov came up with for Eastside Bookshop. Luv the second level meaning inferred by quote marks which are the staple of story telling and writing in context.

Designers United is a design team based in Greece. It that was brought into being by acclaimed art directors Dimitris koliadimas and Dimitris Papazoglou in order to engage visual research and systematic methodology into the design process. DU creates print and digital graphics that enable businesses, art institutions and other organizations to improve and strengthen their visual language.

Jeffrey Bowman aka MrBowlegs shows the behind the scene of this Computer Arts projects installation to create the cover. We show it because we luv paper sculptures and DIY stuff.
Zhou Fan art
Mysterious and exhuberant cornucopia of fish, seaweed, oddities and flowers details abound in Zhou Fan illustrations.
In late 2007, he was selected as one of the top 25 emerging Chinese artists (out of over 1300 applicants) at the Chinese Art Prize (CAP) and was given the special mention prize, which had never been awarded before. The Chinese Art Prize launched his career, and allowed him to gain much more exposure.

Luis Mallo oh so-so-so organized photography from the Open Secrets series, as if obsessing with backrooms grids.
Pouf it up!
Pouf it up by Camilla Hounsell Halvorsen who is a Master student in Design at Oslo National Academy of the Arts. The colourful Drops pouf consists of an inner tube covered with recycled upholstery material. The pouf has been inspired by the process behind making tassels. Drops pouf introduces elements of childish delight and colourfulness into the user’s everyday life.
Ctrl+Alt+Shift
Tom Lovell, a recent graphic design graduate, designed this astute mailer material for Ctrl+Alt+Shift (choose link), a charity wanting to raise awareness about the lack of money specifically raised for women in developing countries.
Won’t say more, see the solution he found! Hats off!
