Design Love

Design Love by Thomas Wilder

idsgn (a design blog) recently had the opportunity to sit down with a few of these design couples that live, work, and design together everyday.

1. Triboro Design: David Heasty & Stefanie Weigler

2. Design Army: Jake & Pum Lefebure

3. WORKSHOP: Jessi Arrington & Creighton Mershon

4. SML Office: Jennifer Wagner & Nico Schweizer

5. Vignelli Associates: Massimo & Lella Vignelli

Featured: Jake & Pum Lefebure from Design Army.

Project 33

We have a small yet very selective collection of vinyl records, which was recently injected with a bounty of collector’s quality records, when a friend handed-out his. So we have a true appreciation for what Project Thirty-Three (stands for 33 rotation per minute) does.

The blog features collected album covers that were scanned and archived by the owner of Jive Time Records, a Seattle based store specializing in used vinyl.

Luf Design

Leaf Tie is a beautiful little gadget to keep the wires (and don’t we have plenty of these around our home / studio) tidy! Created by Luf Design. Don’t forget to check-out their other outstanding products.

Couldn’t agree more with them: they are leading the future!

Tea please!

Love herb tea – to warm up with in the Winter. Would luv to have a Chigra, a tea infuser designed by Relogik. Since we always blow on tea to make it less hot, why not blow to diffuse the flavor?

Brilliant!

Social Networks

Nowadays you can find me active on Twitter and Facebook as well as two geo-tagging social networks where I share thoughts and impressions while living and exploring my city, (Montreal).

What I really like since my network of friends spans the world, were I to travel to another city, will find them instantly and discover spots off the beaten touristic paths, with my mobile.

For example, while I checked-in at the Apple Store, someone (using comments) asked that I look for a particular accessory he needed. Was able to render this service on the spot, commented back – and avoided him making the trip for nothing.

I find this pretty cool.

Another example: while checked-in at Indigo (bookstore) I stated what book I was reading. Then two people asked about it and why it was so important.

I find this empowering.

Why not try it? Join me on Foursquare and / or Gowalla.

Type Faces

Who are some of the movers and shakers? Typefaces is a “top trumps” style card pack contains 20 designers. For each designer, a typeface was selected to match their overall vibe. What a great idea!

Simply yummy

Yummy! Pieoneers does awesome web development using Rails and their website is as awesome! Luv the creamy palette! Large illustrations and typography makes it stand out. Simple. Simple. Simple but not boring.

Panning only

Gotta luv the Estudio RJDesign website. One pager with nav that slides over background and client work presented in a large panning visual! Nice!

Sidlee redux

Sidlee is a multidisciplinary creative team of 250 artisans (of many persuasions). They work globally for top-tier clients from their Montréal, Amsterdam and Paris ateliers. They are people passionate about embedding brands, products, spaces and services with meaning and resonance.

Their new website under the guise of a deceitfully simple interface hides manifold navigations which are easy to uncover, leading you to explore their creative and achievements.

Style Conscience

The future belongs to companies that will include a social cause within the core of their business plan and activities. We all need to buy products – but buying knowing you are doing good – is a profound incentive to find and support these.

Presenting Style & Conscience an online boutique brought to you by two Montreal-based nonprofits: The S.W.A.P. Team and Montreal Couture.

Black Material

TRIANGLE is a video experiment done for the book ‘Black Material’ which showcases Robert Knoke’s artwork. Onur Senturk chose to create tense harmony between geometrical forms and organic movements.

by Skill Lab

Terrific video based on Skill Lab footage shot on location at OFFF Paris. The montage is extremely professional. The camera movements toggle from crisp and sweeping angles to smooth and intimate close ups. The final cut really shows their creative eye and sense of story as well as their technical prowness.

You must see this!

Badge Design

Call for entries! 6th annual Button Badge Design Competition (2010) by Stereohype.

Deadline: September 14

Cheer Up! Clothing

Cheer Up! Clothing has got not only really cool merch but a nice website too. Luv the different typographic treatment used for navigation, the cute iconic system and the clean interface with lots of negative space. Now go wear some!

Mapped out!

Mapping it out! Fascinating skill the one that some, such Aaron Beshon has, to take dizzying complex information and turn it into understandable diagrams and visuals. His are humoristic, quirky and well designed.

Read my sole

Can you read my sole? Sole tread designs for Merrell footwear by Alex Robbins a freelance illustrator and graphic designer who has an obsessive and experimental approach to image-making.

Quite an idea huh?

Curvy architectural

Egill Bjarki photoshoot of the Gemini Residence underlines his ability to capture the geometrics of this curvy architectural marvel. Almost looks like graphic design elements.

Foodscapes

Wow ain’t these superb photographic compositions? If you agree, you need to see these up close, because they are Carl Warner extraordinary Foodscapes – which means the staging is made of food mainly… Mind-boggling concepts. Access the series by choosing the Still category on his website.

So what do you think?

Morningcraft

Betsy Walton explores the tension and balance between the mysterious nature of our existence and the objects and environments we find in everyday life. We can experience the sublime in the same room where we fold the laundry, and perhaps at the same time.

Impressed by the fact that she works with a spontaneous approach and few expectations of specific results.. but the results are exceptional.

Projektowanie

Yellow has always been a favorite color since I was a kid and it’s quite infrequently used as an interface dominating background, but heck – it does sparks your attention. Presenting Projektowanie, a small family business workshop operating in publishing and interactive assignments. Shouting out of Warsaw, Poland.

Nick Dewar

Born in Scotland, Nick Dewar grew up in a small fishing town. He has lived in Prague, London, a farm in Cumbria and New York for nearly ten years. He has recently moved to Southern California. He no longer has to bathe in his kitchen.

He is an award-winning illustrator who has managed to keep a very spared and clean look for his work while injecting a good deal of funk to make it editorially appealing and memorable.

_______

Note: Nick passed away 6 months ago. May this post serve as a tribute to him.

Camilla Engman

Often through animals or people, Camilla Engman pictures inspire their audience with a wide range of feelings. Her work has a knack of allowing you to grasp a notion without robbing you of your personal interpretation.

Vivid and Kitschy

Christian Northeast is an ex-grungy (influenced) illustrator who has been perfecting his abilities since a long-long time. In fact, he is succinctly stated and punctuated as having a sharp-edged visual style. Would go even further, that he’s the best crossover between lamely kitschy and over the top pop-artsy.

The sheer depth of his portfolio is ample statement to clients engouement for his quirkiness and vivid imagination.

Wonder if the “untitled document” title header is a personal stunt or oversight?

Design for iPad

The iPad Design resources is a must bookmark if you intend to develop for it. The LiveView remote screen app developed by Nicholas Zambetti is terrific (good for iPhone too).

MSTRPLN®

Really like his master planned and clever branding concept – thought out right down to an iPhone app – for Montréal-based art director and multi-disciplinary designer Stefan Dukaczewski aka MSTRPLN®. Most of his portfolio work has to do with sportswear apparel and brands.

Savio Fonseca

Particularly like the Multi concept and visual design goodness by Savio Fonseca.

Shop Marking

Recently launched Playwho – a social shop-marking website where people discover, collect and share buyable products. Showing: some current cool stuff.

Space to watch as more and more will be added.

(I have 2 invites to share. If you want in – let me know.)

Lab Partners *up

HP Retail Publishing Solutions concept by Lab Partners. The idea was to create little white environments that could house the HP products, an employee, and a set of modular illustrations running up the background wall that changed out for each ad.

Must see!

James Obriant

James Obriant is a graphic designer and he’s right about being sure we’re digging his work. His portfolio is eclectic but there is no randomness. His work is sharp conceptually, deliriously simple and sometimes, right over the edges.

Firefox mobile

Firefox is going mobile! Plus, with Firefox Sync will synchronize perfectly with your desktop Firefox – even your open tabs! Using open technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript to view and build rich mobile apps.

HP – Hit-print

If your printer could bring your research to life, how would it look? HP – Hit print. Awesome student project.

Interface app

Interface designed by Less Code is an iOS mockup and prototyping app for iPhone and iPad that is pretty awesome. Best feature: export to xcode.

Uppercase *up

Uppercase (luv-luv-luv the logo) is all about books and papergoods. Vibrant blog covering all above and the makers of such. An online store too. The space is a design studio and doubles up as a gallery. It is home to the gorgeous printed mag of same name. Running under the bright direction of Janine Vangool, she steadily plows her way. And her way, can only be up.

Really admire what she has been building over the years. Can’t wait to see what else, she enterprises.

Granimator

Granimator is a freeform iPad app and iPhone (to save as) wallpaper creator and thanks to ustwo who thought of giving a free creatively stimulating space – you can even upload yours to the gallery if you want to. How’s that?

_______

Have fun!

Sam Pierpoint

Visual extravaganza brought to you by Sam Pierpoint who creates tutti-frutti like landscapes of mix media illustrations, collages and sometimes, includes some paper sculptures for perspective.

Luv her work!

Hop Hop Hop

Part game, part performance, Hop is an augmented version of the traditional game of hopscotch by Tinker London, a multi-disciplinary team that works with great collaborators.

Web Trend Map

The Web Trend Map 4 plots the Internet’s leading names and domains onto the Tokyo Metro map. Domains and personalities are carefully selected through dialogue with map enthusiasts, and every domain is evaluated based on traffic, revenue, and character.

WAD Magazine

Stunning paper sculptures, staging and photography for WAD Magazine by Le Creative Sweatshop.

Yigloo branding

Foreign Design Policy Group, a design strategy, design thinking and ideas bureau, branding and interior design for Yigloo yogurt store can’t get any sweeter! The unification intent and presence was ported to almost any imaginable and available (and unpredictable) surfaces. Made with tall and small kidz in mind.

Just want to take all the little huggable characters back to the studio.

Grandpeople *up

Check out the new website for Grandpeople. Ideas, visual communication, illustration, photography and creative direction from the western edge of Scandinavia to the world, since 2005.

Instant Oil Spill

“We can evade reality but cannot evade the consequences of evading reality”.. An ominous quote that appeared after trying out the Instant Oil Spill flash overlay on Netdiver website.

Viral diddy by Mark & Phil which provides cause marketing and philanthropic strategy for non-profits and socially responsible companies and Greener Media.

Concepd is?

Some of you might remember that there used to be an Explorative directory on ND. Due to standardization of the web (good thing!) – it lead to having a real hard time replenishing and stocking the directory with worthwhile projects. So we merged the content with either Flashware or Imaginative galleries.

Anyway, Concepd – a websight (clever huh) – is one such.

Creative brilliance

No end to the creative brilliance of fellow Montrealers (and friends) Julien Vallée, Simon Duhamel and co, in what they did in creating OFFF 2010 Sponsors Titles. Limited resources ain’t no excuse. They are proof enough. Hats off!

Letterpool London

Letterpool London is looking for your photos — names, signage, signals and street art of London for a new book. Letterpool London is a mass public art project, a celebration of the city’s urban art and architecture, looked at through its typography – the brands, graffiti, instructions and ideology around us every day and is open to amateurs and professionals, Londoners and visitors.
