MTV The Lick

Stylized typography, line art movement, simple geometrical elements result in a gorgeous motion graphics design for MTV The Lick show bumper by Monika Rohner.

Deadline stress?

How do you deal w/ deadline stress? by Carole Guevin

I do pretty colors. One common mistake is to just keep working till the deadline not taking into account the creative overload of both your brain and emotions. To design is a somewhat linear process where information (brief – direction – objective) lead our actions.

Through the years, I kind of always go into the same cycle and I’d like to share how I manage and snap out of it.

I always start with a great appetite and enthusiasm for the approved or nailed concept. For days I will work feverishly, seemingly without never ending energy. Just seeing the blocks falling into place is very exciting (and exhausting).

Next thing I know, the deadline is looming and I stumble into a state of creative paralysis. I’m filled with doubts about the direction. Tempted to can the whole dang thing. Last but not least, fear altogether not getting there..

_______

Why is it so?

1) I’m tired out of my wit because of the hyper focus given to project.

2) I’m stucked in micro-vision instead of macro. Lost the big picture.

3) I’m placated by it won’t work, worst – that I’m not good enough.

_______

Of course the whole thing could go south anytime now. Years of experiencing lead to find and apply an (almost) fool-proof solution.

5 Steps for keeping your sanity and getting back your mojo

1) Stop working on the project immediately – you’re useless anyway

2) Leave your desk / office. Go do something else. Totally unrelated

3) Keep away from project till you no longer fear the deadline

4) Don’t think about the ‘deadline’ as your personal ‘execution’ but as what it is: delivery date.

5) When you feel rebooted, go for the finish line, run / rush with all your renewed might and deliver.

Subconscious Pink

Subconscious Pink is a new and intriguing conceptual serie of photographic montages by Nik Mirus who has been recognized multiple times as an emerging international photographic and visual artist talent.

Upcoming exhibit: Nov 2-26 — Galerie Armatta Montreal.

Animated A-Z

Born in Sweden and currently based in Hong Kong, Daniele Manoli created during his spare time, this self-initiated non-commercial project titled Animated A-Z consisting of totally weird, out-there explorations of the alphabet.

We all need to stretch our creative muscle one way or another.

Sparrow V. Swallow

Sparrow V. Swallow is the collected labors of Phillip Fivel Nessen and also sometimes other people. They currently work in Brooklyn, NY, on computers and with pencils.

Some of the style used in their illustrations reminds me of the pop-art movement of the 60’s – 70’s.

Grip (un)Limited

“Smart seasoned people get to better ideas faster..” smart liner by Grip Limited a multi-disciplinarian studio based in Toronto. And they do show their capabilities by using smart captions and visuals.

Luv the typographic treatment, the sliding panels and navigation.

The Volkskrant

Dutch newspaper The Volkskrant commissioned Lernert & Sander to make an image for their cover to depict the urgent matter of the current right winged government cutting back all money for the arts. Got it?

Messed up

Seriously messed up here! Who would have thought to shoot table tops full of dishes and food would be so gorgeous? None other than Rachel Bee Porter in her exquisite photography serie titled: The Joy of Cooking.

Rafael Sottolichio

Probably one of the most promising young painters, Rafael Sottolichio approach is about mixing traditional grand’maître artistry for painting people (superb transparency and white useage) and design based esthetics for background and spatial elements.

His sense of perspective is dazzling (as his palette). Some compositions include both geometric forms and lines which gives a funky modern feel to his art.

Laurent Cayla

Céline – Au-delà des Images by Laurent Cayla.

A tale of spectacular recovery from addiction.

Last night we attended the launch of Laurent’s book. Laurent is a long long long time friend of JF (they both attended Le Collège Français) and kept in touch through the years. We wouldn’t have missed this event for the world. A true celebration of his new chance at life.

In fact who is he? For close to 10 yrs, he was Céline Dion official / personal photographer. While leading the high-life, he descended in hell through addiction to drugs and alcohol. This book (fully endorsed by Céline and René) is a testament to the most important quality: LOVE! Portion of sales will go to her Foundation.

The book includes 600 mostly unpublished pictures.

Brilliantly written by Diane Massicotte.

_______

nota: Book available in French for now. Hopefully in the near future it gets translated in other languages.

Flickafreak reel

Incredibly fast paced, drenched with dazzling motion effects and consumate techincal skills – watch the Flickafreak showreel by Aras Darmawan.

Hooked on type?

Hooked on type? Typeplus is a graphic design atelier and their website minimalist interface is cleverly offering what they do best via using round thumbnails and type animations. Luv the sepia toned treatment with the fine lines grid over each visuals.

Simple yet stunning.

Hippies vs Mods

Those were the days my friends, we thought they’d never end. Digging the Hippies vs Mods poster for a 60′ themed party by Sébastien Nikolaou aka Seb Design.

Tangy practice

My ORB or My ORangeBox is an art and design practice based in NYC and ran by Lucie Kim who works with a brochette of collaborators. Their work spans across many media, platforms and also includes self-publishing projects.

No coincidence the tangy colored visuals on index right?

Fluid elements

Digging the photomontage and the fluid colored elements of the Crazy P CD box design by Richard Robinson.

Tamed or wild

Between tamed or wild hovers Si Scott illustration style. Using repetitive patterns and curves – lots and lots of curves that is inspired from the Art Nouveau mouvement perhaps?

We could say he is seriously addicted to the serif effect!

Freetypography

Who wants fonts? Freetypography has got loads of them.

Artecnica rocks

Artecnica is a Los Angeles based design company that collaborates with the most established and emerging international designers to create inspiring decorative objects for the living environment.

The infatiguable curating duo tirelessly explores vibrant, colorful ways of expressing compelling ideas.

Shooting 4 excellence

Brand new work! Don’t miss the awesome Aldo shoot! Digging the concept! Conceptual thinking being one of his outstanding quality (as well as lighting). Brand new website for Simon Duhamel, an extra talented Montreal based photographer.

Floor to wall

My first reaction was what? Floor to wall to ceiling shelves of books? That’s insane. Then read what Nema Workshop did for their client d’Espresso: “the space is lined in a sepia-toned full size photograph of books printed on tiles.” What an idea!

Satorisan kicks

Satorisan a new brand of kewl kicks and they invite you to name that sneaker. The website is populated with cute little animated characters and the website itself conducive to interactions. Each section is well thought out. Oh, and they got a nice online store too. The white plush – model #20 – is out of this world!

Art directed and designed by David Navarro.

Constrained Ball

What a genial idea this Constrained Ball by Giha Woo.

People not only write with pen. Other than writing, often we draw lines and use a ruler to do so. Hand-drawn often results in anything but. This invention draws a straight line without using a ruler.

I need one of these asap.

_______

Bright idea brought to you by Kokokaka.

“Some first impressions on Cognition the new Happy Cog blog and their effort to suggest a new way of commenting on blogs.”

So what do you think?

Skunk Anansie

The album artwork for Wonderlustre, the 2010 album by Skunk Anansie is terrific! The band asked Shotopop if they could continue with the animal theme and this time around, tried to achieve it with fabric.

They spent a day in the studio, with the amazingly talented photographer, Jeon Seung Hwan to capture around 4000 photos of thrown fabric. Another day with the band, and then, mixed up the band and the fabric to form the final images.

Creative Review app

One of the best iPhone app created by Creative Review (CR) for their photography annual! Wow!

_______

New New trend

One of the best conceptual title sequence, which seems to be the new-new trend for creators to shine, is the recent FOTB titles by Nando Costa. Surreal monochrome ambiance set the tone. Organic matters with bouncing or magnetize elements are strung together in a darkish yet dauntingly beautiful collage.

It won’t disappoint.

Staged ingredients

Now that is something! The little collection of staged vignettes are for an upcoming IKEA cookbook shot by Carl Kleiner and styled by Evelina Bratell.

The geometric exactitude and the choice of forms and shapes shot from above give it a 3D like graphic design feel. But all, are actually ingredients!

Jaw dropping!
