Joris Willems

All he wants to do is play.. well almost. Joris Willems is an extra talented and versatile graphic designer with strong ties to extreme outdoors sports and street culture. Very gifted, as proof, how prolific the editorial assigments completed.

Someone to definitely keep an eye on.

DACS poster

Mike Harrison aka Destill designed this beautiful poster for DACS (Designers Against Child Slavery). Splendid layout and details.

Purpose UK

New stationery set draws upon the rich array of eclectic typefaces and colour in Simon Beattie’s books and catalogues designed by Purpose, a brand communications consultancy specialising in brand identity and marketing communications based in the Uk.

Pixel cowboy

As my big day with JF is now 9 days away.. and as we sprint towards it, preparing all the sweet and cool surprises for our guests – I found out about Brittany & Dave’s wedding.

They took their own spin on what being creative is about. Pixel comboy theme for D&B wedding. Beautiful inspiring touching video edited same day!

Finnian rocks!

Well look who’s blowing me away this am: Finnian MacMannus! Why? First and foremost his talent and how he expresses it. His acquired skills are pretty impressive and promising of much more to come in ref w/ projects.

Second, because he’s already socially engaged – such as TRANS (currently a private art community dedicated to anti-misuse of art) statement: We are strongly against economical schemes and the current situation of how money negatively influences art.

Thirdly? He’s 17 years old.

Milleneufcent84

Milleneufcentquatrevingtquatre is a young French brand created by the collaboration Amélie Charroin and Marie Colin-Madan. Its name represents the year both these textile designers were born.

In particular, the Desert Shore collection is designed with stunning art. Defying and redefining what a ‘scarf’ as an accessory can look like!

De Zines

De Zines tries to reflect what is happening in the contemporary editorial creation on the level of independent publications, how this area relates to the artistic production and social, cultural and current political environment. Around 400 international publications have been gathered from most established magazines in the market until handmade zines and a selection of experimental magazines.

What a great initiative! If that’s not loving design, don’t know what would be.

Outliers, Vol. I

Outliers, Vol. I: Iceland is a scenic documentary of improvised collaboration. Film and video project in Reykjavik, Iceland by Scenic.

This October, a small group of filmmakers, photographers and musicians are setting out on a journey to explore the remote countryside of Iceland and document their experiences with the landscape, residents and traditions they encounter.

The project is anchored by internationally renowned photographers Tim Navis + Kim Høltermand and aided by film collective Scenic and composer Deru.

Sergio Alves

Digging the SLAM typographic treatment that actually builds the illustration (you feel the character ready for a slam-dunk) by Sergio Alves.

Boy meets Girl

Boy meets Girl self-promo animation by extra talented Ben Mounsey who is an illustrator based in London. The simplicity of the characters, storyboard and script.. gave me a big large smile. So elegantly drawn, he has mastered his style.

So typical a story. When you least expect it – it happens.

Wishing you all? LOVE!

Yawn rejiggles

Stop-motion is a pretty time consuming and daunting project to enterprise. Merit goes to Yawn Creative (a recently launched design collective) using the setting up of their studio as subject matter and storyboard.

_______

Watch: The Rejiggle.

FAB fab :))

FAB (standing for Free Art Bureau) is is a non-profit association dedicated to artists and designers working with code and open source tools as their main medium. FAB believes in the empowerment of open standards and supports open source philosophy. They believe in sharing, educating, innovating and promoting.

You’ll find a number of articles, links, resources. They recently held a workshop.

A fab initiative by Mark Webster.

Marcellini *up

Probably not the only one out there, Marcellini studio new website opens on people. Yepp. First and foremost the team is central and presented with a picture (some are quite funny) and little doodled black and white animations which characterize – my guess – each of them.

I’m impressed that such importance is given that.. On the other, no team – no clients – no projects.

The bottom part is a mumble-jumble of information – tad too smallish and perhaps not enough client works. But even the transition to it is a large doodled background.

Well original it is indeed.

_______

Llaunching their very own Marcellini Magazin – shows how confident they are in their ability for self-promo in view of garnering more client work.

Low-Res

The Noble Union is a design company based in London specialising in design and user experience. Their aim? To create simple, intuitive and beautiful apps for iPhone and iPad. Fab example on how to put together a low-res presentation for mobile apps projects.

Keeping it simple works.

Space odissey

Space odissey extraordinary photography by Vincent Fournier. First and foremost, having access to the facilities is already a feat – but the ‘inside’ look into an area of activities that is locked behind doors affords quite a lot of value to his essay.

Quality of lighting, compositions are far exceeded and intriguing but not as much as the topic itself.

Pink and Blue

The Pink and Blue Projects are the topic of Jeong Mee Yoon thesis. This project explores the trends in cultural preferences and the differences in the tastes of children (and their parents) from diverse cultures, ethnic groups as well as gender socialization and identity. The work also raises other issues, such as the relationship between gender and consumerism, urbanization, the globalization of consumerism and the new capitalism.

Alhtough I understand the nature of the exercise – the sheer amount of ‘stuff’ needed for each pictures is throwing me off.

Compulsive? Excessive? Obsessive? All 3.

Wersktatt.fr

Wersktatt‘s craftsmen present their new website. Let’s travel through the wheel of time to discover their work, while waiting for the new ones. Although flash websites may be less favourable in view of all the mobile migration frenzy (65% of all devices connecting to the Internet) – this one is a little jewel of interactive achievements.

Well organized, comprehensive nav, smart loading circle sequence which opens up more to reach full screen on hitting 100%.

Have a lookee.

Landing on Mars-1

Welcome to the incredible meta-universe of Mars-1. Psychedelia meets hyper realism meets imagination on warp meets confounding and unearthly beauty.

The kaleidoscopic details and the richness of colors makes his work totally enjoyable. It invites the viewer to venture into awaken-dreams of exploration of the unknown. Great way to defeat any creative blocks and cynicism.

Bon voyage!

Gotta luv the color-keyed object assemblages on their website homepage. Delicious!

Singular Siggi

Siggi Eggertsson unique creative approach to illustration has won him many recognitions and wide distribution of his work. Simply amazed by the singular shapes he uses to create tangible and recognizable portraits or objects. There is such a high level of tactile information embedded.

Makes me wonder how he ‘sees’ actually. His a pixel world?

What a brilliant idea.

Weaponized code

Anatomy of a Computer Virus by Patrick Clair. An infographic dissecting the nature and ramifications of Stuxnet, the first weapon made entirely out of code. This was produced for Australian TV program HungryBeast on Australia’s ABC1.

What? An Open-source weapon as that?!?!?

This is chilling me to the bones.

Toy Stories

I got miniature little people on my mind today because I just ordered a bunch of them for our upcoming wedding party.

Liliput scenes will appear around our studio as well as incorporated in the jewel boxing design which will contain our video invite – voted to be done in a single take – so expect bloopers – and a few pre-demo songs as a gift to our guests.

If you wish to attempt one yourself, Preiser HO figures are the best and you can find a huge collection here.

Olga Scholten

Mixing eclectic and structured, Olga Scholten is an Amsterdam based designer, and her portfolio site, shows a thin balance of poetic and explorative. Through the years, she’s holding her own. On show, a collection of graphic design work and personal projects (1999-present).

My Name is Wendy

I’m a big fan of Carole Gautier and Eugénie Favre who use to operate under the design collective Polkaouistiti – which is not, as you may agree, a usual studio name.

_______

Now how about reinventing themselves? Yes, they just did. Pleased to present you: My Name is Wendy (an encore as an unusual graphic design studio name).

Again their new website is eye popping with cutting-edge designs, with a strong inclinations towards bold typography. Not to say the use of the early web blueish tint (now #0439ff) linking (if any of you remember).

_______

Wish they would have skip on the blinking index.. but their portfolio is definitely worth it.

_______

Sold-out

It’s been a while since something like the Sold-out project came about. Text only interface – black capital letters with a boxy black underlink, yellow for accent (on mouseover). Simple enough indeed.

Hum Creative

What Comes To Mind? (associative flashcards) is a deck of twenty-seven 4 x 6" double sided cards. The front of every card features an image removed from its original context. Overlaid over each image is a letter of the alphabet, printed in upper and lower case, referencing early education learning tools.

This form instructs viewers to make connections between the image and the letter printed over it.

An original idea by Hum Creative.

The Party Pass

The Party Pass was founded as a new way to connect students and young professionals with the city’s (Vancouver) best restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. With the goal to give its customers a new way to eat, drink, and celebrate in the city, the Party Pass program allowed people to enjoy exclusive deals and privileges when they presented their pass to the city’s participating venues.

Outstanding concept brand web packaging by David Arias.

_______

The Party Pass website is a little gem. Easy and comprehensive. Focussed strictly on getting visitors to subscribe.

Dress a WIG

WIG ain’t what you would think at first take.. but a really surprisingly simple idea turned into.. a white porcelain flower vase. Using flowers or leaves determine the look of it. Handiwork of Tania da Cruz who was born in Lisbon (Portugal), grew up in Brussels (Belgium) and finally landed in Italy.

Love the ‘punkish’ arrangement :))
